ParticipantJochebed was Moses’ mother, Amram’s wife and daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt.
As recorded in Numbers 26:59 “she bore to Amram: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
Jochebed was a risk-taker. Although the Bible doesn’t give us a detailed biography of Moses’ mother, it does disclose the results of the courageous choices she made.
When the Egyptian Pharaoh ordered the death of all newborn Hebrew boys in order to slow the slaves’ population growth, Jochebed took decisive action to protect the life of her tiny son. The risks she took on Moses’ behalf often go unnoticed:
JOCHEBED Mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
Jochebed risked punishment by defying the king’s orders and letting her son live.
She secretly hid her newborn baby for three months (Exodus 2:2).
She risked her child’s life by placing the infant in a floating basket in the Nile. She could not have known if this daring action would result in the baby being lost downstream, being discovered and killed, being drowned, being eaten by Nile crocodiles, or being discovered and spared.
She risked exposure by having Miriam, her daughter, watch the basket and then approach the Egyptian princess with an offer of aid.
Though bold, Jochebed’s choices were not reckless. A descendant of Levi, she had faith that God could intervene and save the boy she viewed as “a fine baby” (Exodus 2:2 NRSV).
Faith can be risky. We don’t know what other risks Jochebed may have taken and how those turned out, but we do know that in this case God fulfilled His plan for the Hebrew people because of the risks she took. Doing what is right isn’t always easy, and it can often be accompanied by a fair amount of risk. But when faith-based risks and God’s plan coincide, the results can change the world.January 16, 2023 at 3:50 pm #1291Sulhazan
KeymasterJochebed is mentioned in the Bible as the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. She is first mentioned in the book of Exodus 2:1-10, where it is told that she was a Hebrew woman who lived in Egypt during the time when the Israelites were enslaved by the Pharaoh.
Faced with the Pharaoh’s order to kill all male Hebrew infants, Jochebed hid her son Moses for three months before placing him in a basket and setting him adrift in the Nile river. The basket was discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter, who took pity on the child and raised him as her own son.
Jochebed is also mentioned in Exodus 6:20, where it is stated that she was the wife of Amram and the daughter of Levi. Her name is also mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in Luke 3:36.
Jochebed is depicted as a brave and resourceful woman who risked her own life to save her son Moses from the Pharaoh’s order. Her act of faith, love and determination ensured Moses survival, and enabled him to become the leader of the Israelites, who would lead them out of the slavery in Egypt and towards the promise land.
She is not only Moses mother but she is also an important figure for the Israelites, her actions led to Moses being the leader that God chose to lead his people and be an important figure in Jewish history. Jochebed’s story serves as a reminder of the power of a mother’s love and the importance of faith and determination in the face of adversity.

KeymasterBible verses that mention Jochebed:
Exodus 2:1-2 “Now a man of the house of Levi went and took as his wife a daughter of Levi. So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw him that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months.”
Exodus 2:9 “And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.”
Exodus 6:20 “Amram took as his wife Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram, Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.”
Numbers 26:59 “And the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.”
Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.”
These verses show that Jochebed was Moses mother, she was the daughter of Levi and was married to Amram. She is known for her act of faith, love and determination to save her son Moses from the Pharaoh’s order, who hid him for three months and then placed him in a basket and set him adrift in the Nile river, where Pharaoh’s daughter found him and raised him as her own son. She is also the mother of Aaron and Miriam, her actions and faith are remembered by the Israelites and are an important part of the story of Moses and the Israelites liberation from Egypt.
