KeymasterAbdon was a Judge of Israel who led Israel for eight years. The bible records Abdon to be a wealthy man with forty sons and 30 grandsons each of whom he had provided with a donkey.
After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, led Israel. He had forty sons
and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel eight years.
JUDGES 12:13–14 It’s often what isn’t mentioned that really tells the story. For example, if someone filling out a job application fails to answer why he or she left a previous job, it’s very likely that this information would make the applicant look bad. It’s hard to say for sure, but the Bible’s short record of Abdon may be saying as much by what it doesn’t say as by what it says.
The Bible does make it clear, though, that Abdon must have been a very wealthy man. It is impressive enough that he could have fathered and raised forty sons, but it is a truly incredible achievement to provide each of them as well as each of his thirty grandsons with his own donkey to ride. To connect that to today, it would be like saying he bought each of them his own car!
But curiously absent from his record is any mention of his deeds or of Israel’s deliverance from any oppressing nation. That may be because he never really performed any amazing deeds or helped to rescue Israel from anyone. He may have simply been the most influential person
around when the nation needed to fill the role of judge. We don’t know for sure, but that seems to be the implication from the Bible’s account (Judges 12:13–15).
Abdon came from the town of Pirathon in the hill country of Ephraim. This otherwise unknown town was also the home of
Benaiah, the head of David’s bodyguard (2 Samuel 23:30). -
