Gomer was prophet Hosea’s wife, who God asked him to marry. Gomer is one of those people we would rather not acknowledge that we know. Perhaps that’s because she reminds us of ourselves in ways that we wish she didn’t.
Gomer was the wife of the prophet Hosea, whom the Lord commanded to marry an “adulterous wife” (Hosea 1:2).

It is not clear whether she was unfaithful when Hosea married her or only became unfaithful after the wedding. Whatever the case, Gomer sadly demonstrated that Hosea chose correctly when he married her, for though she bore Hosea three children, she eventually left him for another lover. Later Hosea found her again and even bought her back so that she could be faithful to him once again (Hosea 3).

In all this, Gomer was a living allegory of the unfaithfulness of God’s people. Israel had been chosen by God to be a covenant partner with Him, but they had been unfaithful to Him by worshipping other gods and embracing wickedness. The Lord desired for them to come back to Him, but they often refused.

In what ways have you been like Gomer? How have you strayed from your commitment to be faithful to God and His covenant with you? Is He calling you to return to Him and be faithful to Him once again? Don’t run from the joys that God offers His people as His bride—His faithful, covenant people.
