Jairus was the ruler of the synagogue. He came to Jesus, fell at His feet, and pleaded for Him to come and heal his dying daughter.
Luke.8.41 – A man came up, Jairus by name. He was president of the meeting place. He fell at Jesus’ feet and begged him to come to his home
And if we find ourselves perplexed by Jesus as He took time to find out who touched His garment amid a great crowd, we are probably thinking the same thing about life. But Jesus didn’t see things that way. There is no mention of urgency in His pace, no mention of concern about whether they would reach the girl in time to help her. And even when someone informed Jesus along the way that Jairus’s daughter had already died, no mention is made that Jesus expressed any despair. The Bible doesn’t record Jairus’s reaction, but he may have wondered whether Jesus really cared what happened to his daughter.
But Jesus responded this way not because He was uncaring, but because He knew He had no reason to worry—His Father was in complete control of the situation (Luke 8:50).
When Jesus finally arrived at the house, He simply made His way to where the girl was, took her by the hand, and raised her to life again. Such is the power of God—and the reason that we, too, can always find great assurance and peace in Him.
Jairus was said to be a “ruler of the synagogue,” which probably meant that he was in charge of arranging the services for the local synagogue each Sabbath day. The book of Acts makes reference to two other people who were rulers of the synagogue (Acts 13:15;
18:8).
