Mary was the sister of Martha and Lazarus.
Mary was definitely a woman whose heart was given to Jesus. She seemed completely consumed by Jesus’ presence when He visited her house, and her loving act of anointing His feet revealed just how deeply she was devoted to Him. Mary was the sister of Martha and Lazarus, and they lived together in the village of Bethany just outside of Jerusalem. Jesus apparently stayed with them from time to time when He was visiting Jerusalem.
Once when Jesus was visiting, Martha was busy attending to all the preparations—and she became frustrated that Mary was choosing instead to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to Him. She asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her, but instead Jesus affirmed Mary’s choice to spend time in His presence.
Another time, not long after Jesus raised Mary’s brother, Lazarus, from the dead, Mary’s deep love for Jesus was made even more public when she took a pint of expensive perfume, poured it on Jesus’ feet, and wiped His feet with her hair. When Judas rebuked her for this seemingly wasteful act, Jesus instead praised her for preparing Him for burial and showing her great value of the short time that He would be with them.
When is the last time you have lavished love on Jesus, doing something that “fills the air” of those around you with a sense of your deep care for Him? Are you making the most of your time with Him? Or do you continually choose the daily things of life over Him?
